No Other gods

A two-part series which will be concluded next week. Discover more about the truth of God’s love, purpose and our part to play in keeping with Ten Commandments especially the first…

Thou shalt have no other gods before me
(Exodus 20:3)

We all know about the love story of God and the children of Israel; how He made a covenant with them and they constantly broke it like a runaway bride. But God in His infinite mercy and love still forgave and accepted them time after time just as it is with us today.

Before then, He’d given them the 10 commandments (Exodus 20:2-17) so that they may not break the covenant nor disobey Him and they would be His most treasured (Exodus 19:5). Taking a close look at each of these commandments will actually reveal that God was also trying to protect us in one way or the other.

Take for example, the seventh commandment, ‘You shall not commit adultery’. This command aims at preserving the sacred institution of marriage. The sixth, ‘You shall not murder’, seeks to preserve human life, both of which are very special in the sight of God. All these laws therefore aim at maintaining a successful relationship with God and man. They all preserve something special!

The first four commandments show how much God wants us for Himself and all the possibilities that may deter us (idolatry, disrespect, even work) but have to be prevented. Therefore, you can see that God truly desires a unique relationship with you! You are His most prized possession, created in His own image and given an inheritance in Christ as His children (Exodus 19:5, Genesis 1:26, Romans 8:17).

The only reason preventing this from happening to the maximum is you. God is ever willing. However, we all have the power to DECIDE. He wants no competition; no other gods…
