Becoming Like Jesus: A Man of Prayer

"I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you. Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." (John 13:15-17)

Becoming like Jesus… Isn’t that the purpose of being a Christian? Being Christ-like?
Accepting the life that Jesus gives and doing away with the old life of sin… Now, even that whole process or transaction was done through PRAYER!

As a Christian, prayer is an utmost task. We’ve got to be constantly communicating with our Father in Heaven; thanking Him, worshipping Him, crying out to Him in times of distress, asking for direction, seeking His help and every other thing.

This was exactly the example Christ set for us to follow while He was here on Earth. He never took the job of praying lightly. Before He did anything (as everything He came to do and did was serious), He always went on his knees praying. He always sought the counsel of God in everything!

Before Jesus began His ministry, he prayed. Before he healed Lazarus, He prayed. Before He was arrested, He prayed. Before He died, He prayed. Before he ate, commanded… He prayed!

The purpose of all these prayers…

1.    It made His work easier as He settled everything in prayer a great while before dawn and was executing throughout the day. In selecting his disciples and His apostles, it may have seemed so easy and probably just out of luck. However, Jesus had already settled all that in prayers in the wilderness and in His quiet time.

2.    His work had no leaks, no mistakes, and no hitches at all. It may have seemed impossible to carry out such a great task without having any mistakes along the line but Jesus did all that and more. He had already received guidance from God in His place of prayers!

3.    Also, it granted Jesus favour in the sight of God. It kept Him in tune with God’s plan and direction for His ministry and lifestyle which we all live by today. It avoided Him from making any reckless decisions. It provided Him self-control and authority. It strengthened and humbled Him in God’s presence. It helped Him to leave a life-time phenomenal legacy…

If all these were to be applied in our lives, I’m absolutely sure it would save us many tears and sorrows. Many of us just jump into making careless decisions and pay the price later. Do we even seek God’s counsel for anything or is it just in times of trouble?

In addition to that, Jesus said that the servant is never greater than the master... Now are greater than Jesus to take the praying example He left for us for granted?

Sometimes, you may not feel like it just as Jesus felt in the Garden of Gethsemane but you have to push yourself and pray out your heart. You may even feel left in the dark but remember God’s words… He will never leave you nor forsake you…

Never lose hope! You can become like Jesus… You can become a praying man!
